I'm filling this out for my mother.
She wants to move closer to me (CT to Long Island) and she wouldn't mind living in parts of NJ, Brooklyn, Queens (nice areas), Manhattan, Fairfield County (CT), north of NYC (Westchester, Orange, Putnam) or Long Island.
In Connecticut she paid $775/month for a 2 bedroom in a ghetto area.
She didn't like living in an area like that. But she's looking to spend under $1000 (total) a month.

Where are you coming from? New Britain, CT
Why are you moving? To live closer to daughter
Where will you be working ? Within 20 miles of final decision

Will you buy or rent? Rent
What is your budget ? Up to $1,000/month (utilities incl.) or $900/month (no utilities incl.)
What kind of place are you looking for ? Apartment

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? One small dog (8 lbs full grown)
Do you need/want good public schools? Doesn't matter

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
I'd like to find an area that's cheap yet not ghetto.
A place with a downtown village for shopping and access to trains.
A comfortable environment to walk a dog around town without getting asked for spare change.
A town or city that has parks.
Needs to have malls and within 5-10 minute drive from a local Target!!! Definitely!
And a good selection of restaurants in the "downtown" areas of town.
Starbucks and other coffee shops are also a huge plus!

List three things that are important to you in order of importance:
1. Accepts dogs but doesn't put a huge hole in the pocket
2. Is within an hour commute (train, bus, or car) to NYC (Penn Station)
3. Low crime rate and minimal ghetto kids walking around the streets causing a ruckus or driving around blasting rap

Amityville, Amity Harbor, Huntington, Farmingdale or Lindenhurst. Anything further east then Huntington, Ronkonkoma or Babylon will be more then a hour train ride. Its going to be tough to find something under $1000 id look on Craigslist for a illegal rental.

In that price range, of those mentioned, Lindenhurst would be your best bet. The dog will be a problem and cut down further on availability and forget about 2 bedrooms! Studio is more like it, maybe a one bedroom with an efficiency kitchen.

With utilities? Forget Long Island and the city. The only possibility is if you found a rental probably illegal where the landlord included all. If legal, it wont happen. Jersey or Conn would be better.
