My wife and I are looking for an apartment/rental house in NY. I'll be working in Manhattan, and we're looking for an interim rental before we buy. What would be the best places for :

- Within 1 hr commute
- safe, quiet area
- more small town feel than big city
- rental from 2000-3000

schools aren't important, house would be preferred.

Thanks for any leads!

finding good quality rentals is HARD

I would check out Long Beach: maybe someone is renting out a condo. ALternatively, go to a real estate agent.

It's not so bad to find a whole house for rent, and in that price range you can find them almost anywhere that isn't ultra-ritzy. For a 1hr commute on the LIRR you're pretty much limited to Nassau, but if you don't mind getting up 10-20 minutes earlier some of the best values (rental wise) that I've seen are in Huntington and surrounding areas, great neighborhood too.

How about Northport, Huntington or Babylon Village? All quaint and peaceful villages that are about fifty minutes from Penn.

Northport is actually closer to an hour and 20 minutes to Penn. Huntington might be doable.

We're renting in the Northport area before we decide where to buy. We really like everything about it so far, other than the distance to GC where I work. I have seen some houses for rent under $2500/month.
