AP high school classes and HS honors classes are not gifted education. Gifted education falls under the domain of special education. Stuyvesant High School does not offer a gifted education program. These are just academically advanced programs. There are several different methods of measuring and classifying giftedness. Getting a 5 on the AP English exam or Calculus BC does not mean that child is gifted in English or calculus. Gifted children also may experience other problems that hinder their ability to function well in school. Truly gifted individuals, adults and children think outside the box.

I have only met 3 for real gifted adults, one a Flemish musician, the other a Mcarthur Award recipient for science, the other the composer of one of the most well-known peace anthems in addition to the other zillion hit songs. Even my college professor cousin with his PhD in physics from Princeton is not really a "gifted" individual. And he's probably ASD. I think the OP was looking for a gifted program, not classes for bright diligent, but ordinary students. Maybe, something along the lines of NEST+m in NYC.

Oh, there are programs and schools dedicated to the education of the 'gifted'.

"Gifted children also may experience other problems that hinder their ability to function well in school."

There is a blurry line between the 'gifted' claims and the autism spectrum (alternative diagnosis).

"I have only met 3 for real gifted adults, one a Flemish musician, the other a Mcarthur Award recipient for science, the other the composer of one of the most well-known peace anthems in addition to the other zillion hit songs."

I wonder if anyone is so 'gifted' in personality/intellect concealment they can conceal their own 'giftedness'. Perhaps you have met many more.

NEST is one program in the NYC public schools dedicated to gifted special ed. We have a school for the gifted right here on Long Island. Some gifted are only gifted in specific areas or have other issues, just like everyone else. I didn't mean to imply that gifted people are all savants like Rain Man. Some are outgoing and have no problems socially. Teachers with certification and training in gifted education have studied this (not me). My point was that some gifted students attend AP classes in high school, but not all successful students in AP classes are gifted. The course was not designed to specifically attend to the needs of gifted students.

I am sure that you are correct that I have met other gifted people. Not all achieve public recognition and success.
The ones noted above did achieve that and were gifted, more than just intelligent, sharp, bright, or however you wish to describe a larger population.

Very good points. I got a 5 on many AP exams, but I would probably not be considered "gifted".
