The bar scenes in Suffolk County are centered around Port Jefferson, Patchogue, Huntington, and to a lesser extent Smithtown and Northport.
Cost of living on LI is sky high. You will pay more for everything. 55-60K is okay but you will be shocked how your money dissapears without a roomate or spouse, especially spending $1400 for an apartment and then having a car payment and car insurance. Many people making those salaries here live at home with their parents until they get married, no joke.
Thanks for the info, dman. I appreciate it. According to 2013 payscale, after certifying (usually 2-3 years after starting for most) the pay with locality is about $135-145k. Long Island has some of the highest locality adjustment in the country.
no, ZNY handles some of the most congested air space in the country. You'd want them to be trained properly.
It's pretty funny the dichotomy that occurs when people in certain occupations are a)bragging about what a great gig they have because they don't work very hard vs b)trying to convince you how hard they work.
It depends on the company they think they are keeping and how many beers they have, I guess.
It's surely an important job that you don't want complete idiots doing and should be paid well, obviously.
Last time I checked, only about 70% of the developmentals actually make it through training at ZNY. That doesn't scare me or anything, but it is an indication of what to expect. I am sure that % is comparable to other careers. The job is NOT for everyone and I acknowledge that I must be confident, yet prepared to work hard and learn. I had a 200-hour internship at Indianapolis airport and it was unreal. I enjoyed every second of it. But, I can see it not being for everyone.

And thank god for it! Although friggen Houston's locality is still more than ours (which has been frozen since 2010).
Good luck over there with your training a buddy of mine worked there for several years, I know it's not easy. There is a reason the FAA pays by complexity of the facility you work at.

ATC is one of those jobs where you can spend a lot of time doing relatively nothing (depending where you work), and then the **** will hit the fan and you earn a year's salary in a matter of minutes. It is in fact a great career, but you can expect to have your heart in your throat on occasion.

Checking out at ZNY will probably take a little bit longer, especially if you go to one of the ocean areas. This may sound strange, but salary is not the most important thing to a new controller. The most important thing is for you to check out, so that you have career security and you have the option of transferring somewhere else in the future (should you choose to do so. Just know that it is difficult for controllers to transfer out of ZNY). If for some reason you do not make it at ZNY, your next priority is to have at least a year under your belt, so that you are no longer on probation. This way they will probably offer you a small tower somewhere (which you should take, proceed to check out, and then you can bid out).
I have heard it is difficult to xfer out of ZNY, but I will worry about it if/when I ever want to. I agree, priority is to check out! Thanks for the info
