I had to have some hot and cold water lines re-routed in my basement when it was refinished. The plumber used a newer product instead of copper piping ( which im not even sure of the tech name for it). It is a red flexible piping that connects to copper pipe with a special clamp. The water line that goes up to the toilet on the main floor was cut at one point and a section was replaced with this red piping. Now it seems that when the toilet is flushed upstairs and the water is filling up the toilet tank , that this red pipe makes a loud TICKING noise until the toilet tank has filled up. At least this is what I have thought about what it could be. This ticking noise lasts about 1 minute. I do know that the location the ticking noise is coming from ,that this red piping makes a curve in direction in the ceiling, now i know the piping isnt "kinked" because the construction of the pipe doesnt it allow it to be and plus i saw the installation of it. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening ?
Huh, that's interesting because our plumber used that same kind of piping when we had our house in NY renovated 6 years ago or so....and when the sink was running on the second floor I could hear a noise. It sounded like a leak, but wasn't, because nothing ever came through the celing. Now I wonder if it was that tubing.
Not sure on the "clicking" but the red and blue pex tubing is the cheap alternative to copper. I wont put it in my house. Although many houses have it. I like copper because I know it will be there in another 80 years.

That's why my plumber used it when we reno'ed. We had already had pinholes develop in some of our pipes. My sister had them and didn't realize it till her LR ceiling collapsed (she had one of those houses where no one ever went into the LR!).
Roc, we know you don't drink the water here, but your pipes do!

You couldn't be more wrong. The pex will last longer.
My understanding is that PEX is supposed to be quieter than copper. As for PEX vs. copper, PEX is a much more inexpensive material (as opposed to copper) so some folks might opt for it for budgetary reasons as well. It's less susceptible to freeze/bursting than copper, but is made up of oil, and has the potential (due to exposure to hot water running through) for chemical leaching into drinking water. It's a toss up.
