I think the general consensus here is the LIRR is never actually a good experience.

No personal experience here, but a few people I know have and they were satisfied.

I have done it a few times, but when I was living in the city, not LI. I found it to be a good experience. The airtrain terminal is actually pretty nice -- i've made it my hangout place when waiting for a transfer at Jamaica. The airtrains themselves are clean, well-maintained, and come pretty regularly.

Yes it's easy and painless as long as there's no trouble on the LIRR. Last time we attempted it someone had jumped in front of a train so there went that plan. But usually it's fine.

I prefer it to other methods for getting to JFK.
