At best the 18 SEER will save you $700 over the life of the unit as compared to the 13 SEER!

18 SEER is best servicing a LEEDs or new construction house.

^ Suzook is 100 correct!

Would any of the other features that the 18 seer have be helpful or make it worth it? or is it just gimmicky? for example:

The Comfort Control2 System™
The
Comfort Control2 System™ provides over 32 on-board diagnostics and fault history codes by detecting system and electrical problems. The integrated diagnostics with Active Protection™ prevents compressor operation when potentially harmful conditions are detected. It sends “Call for Service” alert notification to the thermostat to alert you of required service.

Serial Communication Enhanced
When installed with a Serial Communicating Air Handler and user interface control Series 500 thermostat this unit offers auto-configuration, diagnostic messaging and full communicating capability, to increase your home comfort even further.

Operation
A compressor sound blanket is standard to provide your unit with quieter unit operation. Units are equipped with a reliable Two-Stage compressor for precise temperature control with an On-Demand dehumidification feature. When matched with variable speed gas furnace or air-handler, the system adjusts airflow to help control humidity for unsurpassed comfort in the cooling mode.

Cabinet and Design
Attractive, louvered wrap-around jacket protects the coil from yard hazards and weather extremes. Top grille is steel reinforced for extra strength. Cabinet is powder painted for all weather protection.
The units are constructed with painted galvanized steel cabinets for added reliability and durability. All controls are accessible by removing one service panel. Removable top grille provides access to the condenser fan motor and condenser coil, for an easier time with serviceability. Combination Grille/Motor Mount secures the motor to the underside of the discharge grille. The grille protects the motor windings and bearings from rain and snow.

Durability
All models meet or exceed a 1000-hour salt spray test per ASTM B117 Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray Testing Apparatus, to ensure they can withstand tough weather conditions.

Couple of other points to consider in your decision. Is this your forever home or at least for say 20 years? It would help to amortize the cost over expected number of years in the home.

Last but not least don't neglect to obtain the proper PERMITS. Can't say it enough, you will avoid a huge expense and headache later on if you get it before the install.

We do intend to be in this house for 20+ years. We were also told the units on average only last around 15 years. So in 15 years maybe then the 18 will be the bottom line heh

Nice features but not needed/rarely used and not even close to being worth $1800.

Well I guess the decision is pretty clear heh as much as I wanted to justify the seer 18, it just doesn't seem like it'll be worth it.

Yes, you'll incure the huge expense and headache at the beginning of the process.

If it is a major remodel with spray foam insulation and energy efficient windows would the higher seer be worth it? The attic roof is insulated and the ducts and unit are in the conditioned space. With the rising costs of electric and gas at what point do the higher seer ratings become cost effective? What were the installed costs of the units?

Another great question.....moving the thernal barrier to the roof is a great idea with a/c ducts in the attic. Not convinced spray from is worth the cost and tough to work around. Biggest factor is air sealing the house. Do a blower door test....if the house is near LEED standards, then go the highest SEER you can buy.
