What about where Rt. 25 squeezes down to 1 westbound lane as it enters the town of Smithtown? The perfect bottleneck. What's amazing is this was done after a tragic fatality when a drug-addled driver clipped a little girl. Some one explain why bottlenecking the road makes it safer. It was slow-going even when it was two lanes.
I think the same genius who designed this rube goldberg traffic pattern, out did himself when the westbound lane was narrowed to 1 lane when Rt. 25 heads just past Meadow Rd., as it heads through the state park area. Yes, this was a high-speed section that too was profoundly effected by a tragic fatal accident. Again, it too is a congestion injector more than a safety-enhanced roadway design, IMHO.

IMHO.
I always thought this was done as an incentive to make drivers slow down while driving through "car dealership heaven" to increase car sales
Our road design failures are for multiple reasons:
1. Turn Native American paths in to roads
2. Turn cow paths in to roads
3. NIMBYism
4. Hiring engineers to design roads from the Ray Charles school of Engineering.
Either it's the "annoying tree huggers" who want to preserve things or the "gung-ho land razers" who want to make everything into commerce/infrastructure. Which one do you actually want?
I love how the LIE exit ramps feed you off to a major intersection with only 500 feet to cross 3 lanes to go right. Excellent design.
These ramps are plain dangerous in some areas. The westbound LIE ramps at 57 and 56 come to mind immediately. It can be quite a challenge at certain parts of the day to get all the way to the right if you need to go north on Vets or 111.
