Would anyone be able to tell us a little about what it's like to live in any of these communities on a full-time basis, and how these communities differ from one another?

Mostly great. The vinyard/farm traffic can be taxing at times. Schools are pretty good. Not much difference between them.

It's a little far east but the areas are very nice. Like Karl said, certain times of year like now (Strawberry Festival) and around Halloween can be crazy with traffic. Otherwise the areas are very nice but a little long for commuters especially if they have to travel far west towards the city. Personally I prefer Mattituck around the Nassau Point area.

Definitely a drag for commuters unless you have the luxury of mostly working from home with a few trips here and there a week to "the office".

I did it for a while and it wore me down big time so I headed back west.
Stupid move in hindsight.

Thank you all for your responses.

To hotkarl -- just for clarity, which was the bad move in hindsight, trying to live out east while needing to commute, or heading back west?

I dream of buying a vacation home in Mattituck in a few years....it's lovely and if we can manage to shake this "working for a living" thing I wouldn't mind living there full time once the kids are grown up.
