I was looking at different areas on long-island to call home. Fort Salonga looked like a solid choice -- good schools, walkable to a beach and parks.

However I noticed a giant power plant right next to it -- further research showed that it is one of the largest pollutants in the North East.

As I understand this plant is why Northport has lower taxes -- which are about to go up.

So I am wondering what kind of effect the plant has on the surrounding areas. I cant imagine that those beaches are safe.

Also Looks like long-island as a whole has a failing grade for ozone which I guess is a concern -- do you know if there is a finer break done of polluted areas than by county.

Looks like Port Jeff has one too not as large /and currently offline -- but I imagine that the pollution was a problem at certain point.

Any coastal area nowadays has runoff and beach erosion. If you do a little further research you will see old LIPA hubs by the edge of the water in PJ, the old Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant, and Plum Island Research center (east of orient point). On the north fork there are a bunch of power plant areas scattered.

I understand that there are no clean havens in the vicinity of NYC
I am just wondering how safe it is living and swimming right next to the 2nd most polluting plant in the north east. Houses sell for almost a million so I guess no one is concerned about the air quality...

Air quality won't be that great when they're burning oil (vs. natural gas, which is very clean), but the water is no different than anywhere else. They only use sea water for cooling.

Crab Meadow Beach is very popular with the locals. I've lived just west of the area all my life and we never had any issues with air quality.

My biggest concern would be when heavy rains fall in the summertime they close the beaches for fecal contamination from all the cesspools around there.
