I have an inground pool in E. Northport. We opened early this year to avoid the algae problems that we sometimes face with a mid to late May opening.
The good? Pool was clear. The bad? Instead of the pool needing draining from rain and snow, the water level was a bit low, and we needed to add about 8 to 10 inches. I chalked it up to evaporation (we have a loop loc mesh cover, so its possible BUT unlikely for some evaporation to occur).
It clearly has a leak somewhere....The pool is up and running but is losing about 1 1/2 inches of water per day. It doesn't matter whether the pump is on or not, the water loss is the same. With the pump off I have tried putting food dye right near all fittings (returns and skimmer) and I can't find any leak. I have no main drain on pool bottom. The water is WAY too cold for us to get in the pool to try to search for small liner leaks ourselves.
Any advice as to what else I can try? Can anyone recommend a pool company that does leak detection? Many companies advertise, but I don't know who is honest and dependable. This is our third summer living here with a pool (came with house) and we've never needed to call anyone before.
Leave filter off. Let pool drain/leak until it maintains it's level. That will tell you where leak is. Wherever level stops check all along pool and you should find source of leak. Vinyl or gunite pool?
Ive seen pool repairmen check for leaks by taking a rod and pushing it into the ground near where the pipes would be and checking it for wetness.
