I am visiting the NYC area from SF in mid May and already plan to venture out of NYC proper such as Hoboken and Union City.

What places are interesting to check out and unique in Long Island east of Queens? I read that Long Beach (the small city of 32,000) is very densely populated. No car with me, so how you can go east past Queens efficiently?

No car? Then you will have to use the Lucky If it Runs Railroad...better known as the LIRR.

There is nothing to see on Long Island and without a car the best you will have an opportunity to do using the LIRR is hit every gin mill in every station.

If I had one day open to see Long Island and no car, I would take the train out to East Hampton and walk around town. Round trip, it's about five hours and over $50, but you'll get to see where the rich people cavort. Put on your walking shoes and head out into the wealthy neighborhoods or to the Atlantic. Bring your credit card for a good, but expensive, lunch in town. May is a great time to be out there.

Keep in mind that: 1) East Hampton is nothing like most of the rest of Long Island, and 2) yes, you would be much better off if you had a car.

There is nothing to see in Nassau via public transportation and you absolutely do not want to try riding the bus.

I would suggest Long Beach which is accessible Via LIRR and about a 40 minute ride from Penn Station

It's not 40mins. It's an hour.

Also LB isnt the best right now. The boardwalk wont be complete until November. And for $12 a day to use the beach from memorial day to labour day, there are better beaches that dont charge as much.

The Long Island Railroad is like the Caltrain. Nassau County is just an uglier version of Fremont. A car would be best if you want to come east. There are a few goldcoast (Great Gatsby) mansions that were converted to public attractions in Nassau County, such as Planting Fields Aboretum and Old Westbury Gardens. May is the best month for these places. Theodore Roosevelt's house (the summer Whitehouse) is also in Nassau, but not sure if it has reopened. There are some small museums dedicated to the former Long Island aviation and aerospace industries. Not sure if you will be here on a weekend, but the 19th century baseball games at Old Bethpage Restoration Village can be fun. But the most interesting thing for you would probably be as previously suggested, coming all the way out east to the southfork and visiting the Hamptons and possibly Montauk Point. Athough even that will be underwhelming compared to Monterey/Carmel and even Sausalito. Don't bother with the vineyards on the northfork. If you've been to Nappa, you'll just smirk. Your scenery is much more awesome than ours.
