Kind of frivolous question here, but I've just had the good fortune to be able to leave my job in the Financial District and work from home. For years, when I worked in the city, I would go to one of those "chopped salad" places where you point at all the ingredients you want, they put it in a big metal mixing bowl, toss it, chop it up, and give it to you in a plastic container for $7.99.

I didn't realize how much this was part of my routine (and my diet) until I was no longer working in the city.

My question is this: Is there anywhere on the South Shore (Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore, Merrick) that has anything comparable?

They have EXACTLY what I'm looking for (HUGE selection of stuff) at Fairway in Plainview, but I'm not looking to drive 20 minutes either way to eat lunch in a huge crowd of people. They've tried to set something like this up at Town Bagel and Cherrywood Deli in Wantagh, but they're not even close.

I have lived in this area for my entire life (40 years) and was only a Manhattan commuter. I'm familiar with everything on Long Island, because I grew up here and have lived here forever (in other words, I'm a local). If anyone knows a place other than Fairway in Plainview that has the city-style setup, I'd love to know. Thanks!

There's another Fairway in Westbury now. Also, Yogurt & Such on Merrick Rd., any of the Bagel Cafes (there's one on Merrick Road, and another in Bellmore I think).

Nice, thanks. Westbury is a little far for what I'm looking for. I like the convenience of just leaving my desk, going for a 5 minute walk, getting my lunch, then coming back...so I'm trying to see if that can be replicated here. If it can't, no big deal.

I'll try the bagel places. Thanks very much for the tip.

I feel like most bagel stores typically have what you're looking for.

I know the bagel boss in hewlett has a pretty nice one, so if there's a bagel boss near you i'd try them. Looks like you just need to check out the bagel places

Yeah, there's one in Merrick. I'll try it. Town Bagel in Wantagh is making an effort at the type of thing I'm talking about, but they don't have the options, and the ordering process is weird and slow.

Like I said, no big deal, but seeing the one at Fairway gave me hope that there's a good one around.

I would love to find a chopped salad place near Babylon. It's my favorite thing to eat. In California, we had the same ones that you described & Saks in the Huntington Mall has one, but I cannot find any near here.

A great chopped salad with all the fixings at The Bagel Factory in Airport Plaza, Route 110, Farmingdale! I love it there! It is exactly what you are looking for!

I never would have imagined that a bagel place would have that. Thanks for letting me know.

It is not a typical bagel store, more of a gourmet deli. Walking in you hit the chopped salad station, then move on to gourmet sandwiches and salads. Then great bagels at the end! Try it!
