It definitely applied to NYS insurers.
I've heard of out-of-state insurers who were fighting that; don't know the outcome.

Sandy was not a hurricane, therefore, no hurricane deductible applied.

NBIC policies can have anywhere from just your standard deductible (no hurricane deductible) up to a 5% hurricane deductible. It is all determined by where your house is.

Interesting - so if LegalDiva is on LI somewhere with a $1k hurricane deductible and I'm central Nassau (least risk) with a $28k deductible, then I've got to look into some other companies who are not insane. Or there's still misinformation in there.

So I called around for quotes because I'm due and 2 told me the NYS standard on hurricane deductible is 5% of dwelling while another told me its any of 3,4,5%... The higher, the better the premium is for us which is expected. Couldn't get to Narraganset since they were closed. But nobody else offered just $1k.

Anyway Based on the Sandy response report card in the other thread I called Liberty Mutual and was able to get a comparable quote to what I have now, but when I bundle auto coverage it dropped to only $1200 for 2700sf. Quite remarkable. What's better is I trust them more than the no-name I have now. Even the auto was better by $400 / yr.

That's why most insurers have switched to "wind deductible" terminology.

Liberty Mutual is a good company.

If you are looking to move to NBIC do it soon. They just announced a 10% rate increase.

My "all other perils" deductible is $1k. Maybe you're seeing that instead?

My biggest fear is I'm paying all this money every year and I'm not properly covered. Our neighbor's tree fell just short of our deck and almost hit our roof too. We were very lucky. Now I'm realizing I would've had to pay at least that much out of pocket for it. Did every Sandy victim have to pay tens of thousands at a minimum to repair their damage?

mine renews annually on the day we closed on the house.

My dad had 5 feet of water in his home, everything was covered because it was water damage ( flood insurance covered it). He lost a few shingles off the roof because of the wind, and he paid for that OOP. HO insurance did not cover wind damage
