I signed a lease for a 2 bed room apartment. My roomate left without paying any rent and said the lease is void because the 2nd bed room is not legal. The landlord admits the bed room is not legal. I cannot afford the whole apartment on my own and if the bed room is not legal finding another tenant is impossible. What can I legally do? I drafted a demand letter to my former roomate demanding the rent that wasn't paid as they left with No notice on the 27th of June and did not pay rent for July. Is the lease indeed void because it is only a one bed room apartment? Can I sue my former roomate for the remaining rent on the lease?

Did they sign the lease or just you?

talk to your landlord, a reasonable landlord will find a reasonable solution. you can pay your half until you find a place or a roommate. if you try to work with the landlord he may not be happy, but should understand what is in his best interest.
