Can you have a basement under your garage? A house near mine had the garage torn down and a new basement poured. Perhaps because they wanted to build above the garage? The garage was then replaced. It wasn't just a slab it was a very deep basement. So if you do this can you use it for storage? Or do the pilings have to go that deep and the rest is fill?

I don't see why not as long as the proper ventiliation and firecode regulations have been followed.

Normally, basements are not built under garages because the extra foundation work is expensive. But if one needs the space, they need the space.

I think the other reason why garage floors are poured on a slab (that is on solid ground) is your SUV would wind up in your basement unless the supporting joists, sub-floor and flooring were built to withstand 2-3 tons of machine. Not your average floor load. Of course, you could install an elevator

There is a guy in the Hamptons that built most of his house underground because the ordinates would not allow him to go above 1 1/2 story on his house. As mentioned before it's a preference and if you have the money to pay for it then you can do as you please.

We installed 60' of steel girders and 40' of steel columns in our house and it wasn't THAT expensive. I'm thinking supporting a garage floor would be about the same. But I would agree it's expensive just to be able to use the 400sq.ft. below the garage.

Default What is expensive?

I've lived in three different cities in the last three years. The average price per square foot in the areas have ranged from $50 to over $400 so when people say putting a garage under a basement is expensive I think it just has to be considered relative to the cost of housing in general and maybe just as importantly the cost of land. Where I currently live lot sizes average about 6500 sq ft and many have upwards of $1M homes on them so if you need/want a 400-500 sq ft shop then 1. there is almost no other option and 2. the cost per sq ft of a space like this isn't really even a major element of the overall project cost. When I lived in a place where housing costs were $50/sq ft and I had almost 2 acres of land, an under garage room was just downright stupid but certainly not where I'm at now at $400 sq/ft.

I've had quotes for a new home we're considering that the entire additional foundation and floor substructure costs to add a room under the garage is about $12K - for a 22x32 room that wouldn't exist otherwise - in the scheme of things I think thats not only not expensive but downright cheap. So when the cost of land is high and land itself is at a premium I think under garage rooms make a ton of sense and to be honest I'm not sure why its not almost the norm or at least a lot more common.

Hee hee. Putting a garage under the basement.

Although you dug up an old thread as your first post to comment on. I did find it very useful. Thank.

12k sounds too cheap though For LI. I'd be interested if you DM me the contractor info.
