Court is today. Total ticket is $368, which seems a bit excessive, but if I have to pay, so be it. We recently moved to Suffolk Co. and were going to sell our minivan. Our neighbor said we should take it up to the Home Depot on Veterans in Smithtown, so we fancied up a couple signs and put it there. It was at the side of the lot adjacent to the road with multiple other vehicles, so we really didn't suspect we were doing anything out of the ordinary.
When my wife went to change the sign 5 days or so later, the vehicle next to ours was being towed and the driver told her if she moved it and we came and got it that night, he wouldn't tow ours. Pretty fortunate timing.
What I know I should do differently next time:
*Ask permission from someone, anyone.
*Move the van every 95:59 or less.
That being said:
*There were no signs limiting parking
*The ticket is not signed, nor is there reference to any officer on it.
*They marked sedan when it's clearly a van
So, what, if anything, should I ask for? I'd gladly take a diversion, work some community service, whatever. If none of that is an option, like I said, I'll just cut a check and call it a life lesson. It's not cheap, but I've had other lessons that were way more expensive.
Signs are not needed, its private property, this is a current discussion in another thread about LIRR parking at the Boadway mall.
What entity issued the ticket?
Personal experience, certian mistakes (but not all) nullify a ticket. In NYC, Make and Type of vehice WILL, while color and year will NOT.
One ticket received on a PU Truck (registered as such) was marked SUBURBAN. the ticket was dismissed.
One ticket with an incorrect year of vehicle was upheld.
Buckthedog - Understood on the signs, thanks for that input.
I don't know what entity issues, to be honest. There is no officer name, shield, ID, agency, squad, etc. It's all blank below the court date line. It also doesn't list the fine, I found that online. It says "Parking Tag" on the bottom and "parking summons" on the top right. I presume it's SCPD.
kayo_michael - I should clarify that it's not signed by the officer.
The for sale sign was a giveaway that you're leaving it there for a while but obviously you're doing it for that reason. Next time use public streets instead of private property. Good luck on the fight.
Get this. I showed up in Central Islip as dictated on the ticket.
She says "you're in the wrong place". I respectfully told her that I was where the ticket said. " that's because they've been writing them wrong since April. You need to go to Hauppauge."
Awesome. I live 2 miles from the H. Lee Dennison, so I drive an extra 30 miles and will now be late.
Maybe they can deduct my mileage from the ticket, lol.
