Tiring to do a home renovation. Kitchen baths basement. A buddy said I need to give the contractor architectural drawing and permits for a job in town of Hempstead. Seems like a simple job. This will cost me thousands. Do I really need this? Any downside?
You need to follow town code (some for safety reasons) and that's why you need the permits and drawing approved by the town. If it involves structure in multiple places, you probably shouldn't risk doing it on the down low... who knows where contractors may cut costs. Also for instance if electric wiring isn't done properly, you've got a fire hazard for your family after you've spent all this money.
And of course there's the CO paperwork that you'll need when you go to sell. Normally if it's just kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures, no need to worry about it.
If you use a reputable contractor they will file any permits necessary. If you are finishing an unfinished basement that will be your biggest issue and a CO would be necessary. If it's just a straight remodel without changing structure you probably could get away without a permit.
