Hicksville is an indicator of LI's economic doldrums: lot's of empty commercial space and far fewer businesses operating in the area. It's only a matter of time before the commercial district starts to head downward.
The mall was recently sold, we'll see if that'll improve things.
On things for sure, there's no shortage of traffic on 106/107, despite the prevailing conditions.
Having lived in Hicksville for 25 years, and my husbands family having been here for generations, I have to agree with the OP that there is an issue with that particular area of Hicksville. If you are walking to the train station in the early morning hours (for a 5:27 am), you best be very careful. Homeless, public urination and drug addicts are a problem. It can be scary. There have been people mugged. That being said, I've also been approached on several occasions by drug addicts asking for "train fare" while in the King Kullen shopping center in Bethpage also. The manager has called police on more than one occasion.
We are very mindful that our neighborhood is rapidly changing. We actually were commenting that we literally do NOTHING in Hicksville. While we "reside" in Hicksvile, we do not patronize any of the businesses. We don't go to the restaurants. They are primarily Indian/Pakistani. We don't shop in any of the stores. The downtown is a depressing looking hell hole. Significantly different from the downtown I pushed a stroller through 25 years ago. No post office in town anymore. No drug store, or florist. Those days are gone.
We own a business in Queens. Quite frankly our own neighborhood is looking less suburban each passing year.
Not seeing much difference between Hicksville and Bellerose at this point. In fact it also appears we are both in the damn flight path for the airports. We sit on our back yard deck and have to stop talking because the jets fly so low at times we can read the airline names on the tails of the plane. Being between Islip, JFK and LGA. Only thing keeping us here at this point is our quick commute to the queens, and the taxes being low.

Yeah this is what its been looking like lately. They hang out here all day. No one does anothing, TOB, NCPD, MTAPD just drive by...
The view from the train is pretty depressing as well.
And this one was recently painted only to get tagged up again!
So depressing...the Babylon line is much nicer, but you gotta be rich to live there now
Anyway, its not good that is for sure. I would even say Hicksville's "downtown" area looks worse than that of Westbury.
Unfortunately like many former "blue collar" middle class communities, particularly in the middle of the island, towns turn a blind eye to the quality of life problems and do nothing about illegal housing, vagrancy, and panhandling.
The plane noise isn't helping matters either.
And yes there is crime, there has been recent attacks in the news lately. 2 men robbed Long Island pawnshop, attacking store employee | 7online.com
The Town of Oyster Bay seems to care less about it.
It sucks what is happening to our island, the mid-island blue collar towns are turning to crap, the south shore towns which used to be more middle class and affordable (like Bellmore, Merrick, Massapequa) are becoming expensive and turning into richer white collar towns. This is what happens when the middle class is eroded away, either the rich or the poor take their place. As the supply dwindles further you will soon need to be a CEO to live in a nicer area.
I think Westbury is in better shape somewhat, we have efforts taking place at the Village and Town of N.Hempstead levels to combat these problems. We have made our voices loud and clear we will not be treated as a dumping ground. But it its a very uphill battle. That is for sure. Alot of forces in politics and RE that want to shaft the middle of the island.
And she keeps making expensive improvements to the house too! Like the plush bathroom/throne room last season and this season she turned her son's old room into a gorgeous shoe closet/showroom.
Obviously she doesn't think Hicksville is bad ... and she's a psychic/medium!
Hicksville looks the same as it did 13 years ago when we were there. Not better or worse. We often still go to Broadway mall and pass right through the LIRR area.
Maybe she can call the cops before the next vandalism incident happens? She should know it's coming...
We should ask her to focus in on Westbury and tell everyone when the graffiti artists will be out.
