I think he actually had a better chance coming from William Floyd SD instead of somewhere like Jericho. It added something to his resume that the colleges liked.

Not true at all. College admissions are context based not objective.

Doesn't take anything away from his achievement. A 2250 SAT and the number of APs successfully completed easily puts him in the top 1-2% of students nationwide.

What I am saying is everyone seems to want to put their kid in the top districts yet WF is far from being one of the best districts on the island and yet look how well this kid did.

Yes and that's why people are surprised. Should we not be?

Low expectations equate to low outcomes.

Start expecting more.

Congrats! He is a star!

He certainly is! I am so happy for him.

It impressed me that he sent thank you notes to all of the colleges that granted him admission.

A very special young man, indeed.

This is really not that news worthy. Minorities from poorer districts get into top schools all the time. However, not all of them apply to all 8 Ivies.

Parental influence, personal intellect, and personal work ethic have been and always will be the best predictors of high academic success. It may be, of course, students with these three predictors are clustered in some districts, sprinkled in some districts and rarely present in others.

Actually it doesn't. His SAT score is actually pretty mediocre when it comes to Ivy league colleges. It would have merited admission, but not to ALL 8.

SAT scores matter but they are not the only thing. Good GPA, extracurriculars & sometimes having a story like overcoming cancer or facing adversity factor into the decision as well
