We knew early on that some kids were just better in some thing than we were. Not everyone made the team. If you couldn't hit or catch, you were benched. If you didn't consistantly catch the football, you sat on the sidelines. Our moms didn't have to attend every game and our dads surely wouldn't take off of work to do so.
We didn't go to preschool. When you were 5, you started kindergarten and and it wasn't followed up by a kindergarten graduation.
A date was between us and a love interest. Not something we did to play with other kids when we were 3.
When girls went out on dates, the boys would pick them up. Not meet them along with a gaggle of friends at the theater or restaurant. Guys were responsible for the transportation and the cost. Ahhh
Most of us couldn't wait to "grow up". To go away to college or graduate high school get a job and rent an apartment. The idea of living at home in one's mid 20's was gross.
Regardless of how much money your parents had, most people in my time had jobs once we turned 16.
We could go an entire day from the time we left home for school until when we got home without making a telephone call. Imagine that? lol

Thanks For Remembering Mr.Herb Sheldon,
I remember Herb Sheldon because his son Randy was in one of my classes the year his Dad died of a heart attack, I think. He was quite young at the time. It must have been at least 45 years ago, though. I never knew what happened to that lovely family. I hope they were all right.

Never even thought about disrespecting or disobeying the following;
Policeman, Fireman, Sanitation man, Mail man, UPS man,Teachers, Principals,
neighbors or anyone in a uniform or OLDER than you.
Going to public school and learning, silence in the classroom, pledging allegiance to the flag and knowing if you got a "red" report card you would get a "red ass" to match.
Having love and respect with my community.
Walking to the store and having to say hello to all your friends and neighbors.
Shoveling snow for $$$$$. Bought a Nintendo with my money. The elderly you did free. If people stiffed you Dad made you put the snow back, HaHa
Halloween, yes eggs and shaving cream.
Playing down the train tracks, stupid and I would KILL my kid but really alot of fun.
Playing with real looking toy guns because the idea of robbing someone or pointing it a police officer NEVER crossed your mind.
WWF on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.
Saturday morning cartoons.
Being completely at ease in my own community.
I hope you all grew up like I did! 1976 was a fine year for wine and people.
I only remember the early 1960's edition of"The Merry Mailman's
Funhouse!"weekday afternoons on WPIX TV Ch.11 in NYC.
(This version of the series was seen at Peanut Butter & Jelly
time on Ch.11 and I could only see it when I wasn't in school)
Mr.Heatherton did the show without a studio audience or
a comedy asistant as he had mc'd such a version of his show
on WOR TV Ch.9 in NYC back in the early to late 1950's.
Nevertheless?
I enjoyed the show and the way that this man was able to
entertain and inform his viewers inbetween the reruns of cartoons.
I Miss this type of NYC based kids tv programming and I miss
Ray..sadly.
We lost him 11 years ago to Altzheimer's disease.
