So, the politicos at the Town Hall in Huntington have cooked up yet another scheme to raise money for the Town's coffers. A week ago today we got new parking meters - actually, they're the old ones decapitated with number plates on them so that you can pay at a machine with cash or a credit/debit card.

They cost 4 times as much as the old parking meters, which were 25 cents per hour.

I'm protesting by not parking on the streets until after 8 PM or on Sunday when they're free.

This is not good public relations. A buck-an-hour meter chases people away. I'm wondering what the business owners in the village think of this.

Any comments?

Parking in the various public lots is still free though? What they really need to do is add a garage to improve the parking situation- at certain times it is near impossible to find a spot. Having to pay $1 per hour to park would not stop me from going to Huntington-- but the stress & hassle of trying to find a spot certainly does stop me.

I like meters because it keeps spots open for people actually interested in downtown shopping. I used to get very frustrated in Port Jefferson never finding spots-until they put in the nuisance meters. Is 1 buck an hr worth it to do my business in town? Personally I think it is a little high, I like a quarter/half hr, b/c some people are just picking up take out ect and a dollar really is uncool for ten minutes of use.

Also do the meters still have a 2 hour maximum? I bet the new machines are to keep track of anyone feeding the meter to stay longer than 2 hours. Anyway with plenty of free parking available in the village, it does actually make sense to do things to try to free up the street parking for people who want to be right in front of a particular store.

Sure, let's add a couple of garages and maybe some high-density cluster housing to go with those empty storefronts... well you get the idea.

They're planning on changing some of those free lots to paying, such as the one on Gerard Street across from the Post Office.

Empty storefronts? And you don't there is a shortage of parking in Huntington during busy times? We must be shopping in different Huntington Villages lol!! There is absolutely a need to increase parking.

I just was there a few days ago. Didn't bother me (cost wise) to be honest, although, my receipt never printed and that bugged me a bit.
