Not Rockville Centre as well?? The Diocese for the island is there.
Actually, it's the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre that's located in the Village of Rockville Centre.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Center includes all of Nassau and Suffolk County except for the island Hamlet of Fishers Island in the extreme northeast part of the Town of Southold in the extreme northeast part of Suffolk County (it's just off the coast of New London, CT), which is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut.
It's my understanding that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre is the only Roman Catholic Diocese in the United States that is not named for a city. (Roman Catholic Dioceses are named for the municipality in which the Cathedral is located.)
Lots of people seem to be saying Garden City would be our best bet. Has anyone noticed a problem with it being so close to Hempstead? I would probably limit our search to just the areas closer to Franklin Square and New Hyde Park, and maybe the Central area as well.
Believe it or not, Port Washington has been on the top of our list. Yet, people on these boards say that the town is changing for the worse? We really like Flower Hill and Manhasset Bay Estates.
Does anyone have any opinion on the south shore vs. the north shore (nassau county). We have basically ruled out Suffolk since the commute to Manhattan would just be too much. We have seperated our top choices into sections
South shore we like Wantagh, Merrick, Massapequa, Rockville Centre
North Shore we like Manhasset, Port Washington, Syosset, Glen Head
Mid Island would be Garden City
For those who may not be familiar with Flower Hill

Flower Hill is a village (incorporated in 1931) in the north-central part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the northwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Flower Hill in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Plandome Manor and the Hamlet of Port Washington; on the east by the Hamlet of Port Washington and the Village of Roslyn; on the south by the Village of Roslyn Estates and the Village of Munsey Park; and, on the west by the Village of Plandome Heights, the Village of Plandome and the Village of Plandome Manor.
Flower Hill is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name as part of their mailing address: places in the Village of Flower Hill have a "Roslyn, NY 11576", a "Manhasset, NY 11030" and a "Port Washington, NY 11050" postal zone.

Hempstead does not pose an issue at all. GC has incorporated schools and police. The village is welll known for police patrols. It is very safe. And since the schools are incorporated, the village controls WHO uses teh schools. Incorporated villages are great b/c they have such control over the rules/laws, etc and it keeps everything really safe and attractive.
I pass through GC everyday, and we have looked to move there. Hempstead is not an issue at all (but of course you would not want to buy on a block or two that border Hempstead).
You've been given some great suggestions here. Considering your criteria, I'm quite partial to Manhasset myself, but it's just super-expensive, and you may find living elsewhere more to your taste.

Huh? While the Village of Garden City does have a village police force, I question what you mean by the Village of Garden City "has incorporated schools".
As best as I know, the Garden City Union Free School District (3,504 acres) has a different border and is independent of the Village of Garden City (3,414 acres).
One last suggestion and a pure nugget...check our East Williston. High standards, great schools, country club, excellent city connections and a very nice area.

Other towns do not use GC's schools. Only GC residents use the schools. Not like other towns where another whole town shares the schools. And there are no areas of section 8 or subsidized housing that use the GC schools, whereas Manhasset has a low income area (projects) using the schools.
