Where would you get the most bang for your buck if you are looking to buy a home in Nassau County for around 500-600k?

IMHO your question is much too vague.
How many bedrooms, baths, garage? basement? size of property? max RE taxes? are schools important?

Those are just the basic questions to be answered to give you a meaningful response

And how far are you willing to commute for work, wherever that may be?

I would also add to Elke's post. Rank the order of importance such as schools over commute, or taxes over schools.

Upper Brookville/ Jericho schools. If you can buy something there for 500-600K you'd definitely be betting the most bang for your buck :-)

Perfect town if you are looking for "bang for your buck". Like someone else said, if you look towards Jericho (for example) you are going to get a small home that probably has problems. While you will get a lot of bang for your buck in Hempstead and Roosevelt (which were mentioned), you'll also hear a lot of "BANG BANG BANG" and cop sirens, plus your home will be targeted by burglars. In Locust Valley you will get a great home in a nice area. I just wouldn't look east of there.
