And I was curious on what are some Suffolk County towns that are affordable as far as low taxes and little crime (no or very very rare murders, shootings, stabbings)?
Just a research on my own I've looked at Selden. Keeping the taxes low are most important to us. We don't need a huge home.
Places that we don't care for are: Brentwood, Gordon Heights, Middle Island and Commack/Smithtown (tax wise).

I've used it for every town. As I have said in the past, I am looking for personal experiences from people in Suffolk towns. Unfortunately we have to look at homes that are in the 200s which make us more susceptible to crime or downtrodden areas.
What do you consider to be affordable taxes? A big chunk of your taxes will go to the school district, which means newsday's top districts don't have low taxes. There are a few slight exceptions to that rule but none that will get you in the 200's for a home.
Selden is a nice middle of the road area, I think you can find homes there in your budget.
They also have one of the best libraries on the island IMO.

Go East young man...
Calverton, Flanders, Amaganset; and then of course there's Mastic and Mastic Beach...
Seriously, by the time you're ready to buy (2 years??), who knows where that'll be possible since school taxes keep rising steadily (even if the Towns manage not to increase taxes).
I suggest you read up on "present value" vs. "future value"

We're open to it being a little higher like 5400 a year. Nothing like 9 to 11k.
