I totally agree with the above comments and appreciate the responses. The vet spends 5 minutes with your pet and a couple of shots and then bills $600. I am going to have to go the route of a Petco or something similar. It sounds much more affordable. Also the North Shore Animal League is not far from me.
I realize this thread is old, but just wanted to add my comments.
At least here in Texas, they often have very low cost pet immunization clinics at grocery stores, schools, community centers, etc. You just have to watch for signs, notices, etc. They do rabies and most all shots. They don't draw blood work. The price is quite low, I believe it was $10 for rabies shot. The lines are quite long, so get there early! Of course, all is done by a licensed Vet, and you get the rabies tags, certificate, etc.
As I have LI vets as relatives I know for a fact that few are "raking it in". The only ones doing very well are specialists - like ones that treat cancer or do cruciate repair surgeries. The local vet practice with 1-2 doctors is like your old family doctor - a dying breed that sells out to corporations that manage multiple practices.
It is tough to be a general vet these days - vet school bills like a doctor but paid like a LI teacher. Probably the poorest return on investment of any of the professional schools.
OP, Check with your local county humane society for recommendations.
I'm fortunate to have a low cost vet for my one cat. Annual exam and 2 booster shots is $90, rabies vaccine every 3 yrs is $38. Few yrs ago she had gum infection which resulted in extraction of most of her teeth. General anesthesia, surgery, aftercare, and overnight stay was $450 but Dr. gave me a discount and I paid $300.
They are also incompotent .
I once bought my dog to Selden animal er. My dog needed surgery. They quoted 6k. I asked the surgeon how many times he performed the surgery. He said once lol
They will ********* for anything they can.
Then went to dr Moderator cut: name removed What a ******. sold me a bunch of seaweed and herbal junk that looked like sawdust in a bottle . Of course it did nothing and my dog still died.
They play on your desperate emotions to save your loved one.
