The chance of Long Island becoming a state, much less a viable state.

.
In Suffolk County, property assessments are already done at the Township level, unlike Nassau County.

What's the big deal you ask, the big deal is it all starts adding up. Teachers salaries, police salaries, public employee salaries they all add up. Throw in the benefits, retirement and lets not forget the union leadership you have to pay to represent them. It might be cheaper to go none union and deal with the lawsuits in court then the current salaries being paid out.

Besides you'll have a bigger problem trying to reduce the layers of government that each county has, maybe a special sur-tax can be imposed in the Hampton's to cover unforeseen expenses.

^ I think you knew I meant what's the big deal in focusing on $300k salaries when the numerous teachers easily add up to that and more. You don't have to tell me about screwing the unions. I'd be first in line.

What benefits does Long Island get by remaining a part of New York? Why should we not forge our own destiny alongside the other sovereign states of our nation? Why should we remain beholden to Albany for crumbs when we can get our own handouts directly from Washington?

What destiny do you think Long Island has besides the one it's currently going through?

BTW, Why stop at being a state, why not become it's own country? Long Island could declare war on the US and make claims on Brooklyn and Queens, commuters could cross the border illegally into NYC each day and have the US deport them each day back to Long Island cutting commuting costs, have it's own Olympic team and so much more.

Hey we play enough soccer here to be good enough for a national team. Ridiculous number of kids at hockey too.

Not really. The only sport we excel disproportionately in is Lacrosse. Hockey isn't even recognized as a scholastic sport at the HS level (learned that here on CD Forum). We only have club teams and we have no college hockey teams. Soccer has been steamrolled by lacrosse. We do put out some solid lady golfers though. If it seems like we have so many sports it's just that we have to fill our kid's every waking moment with activities or we'll all dry up and blow away.

^ or all they'd do is sit home and play video games. As we've said in other threads, we already get a lot of free time with kids doing that.
