My wife works in lower Manhattan and I will be taking a 2 year position at Stony Brook. We are looking for an apartment where my wife can walk to the LIRR to get to work and I can drive to Stony Brook in an hour or less (I hope less). I will need to buy a car soon and am seriously considering a Prius in order to use the HOV lane, as I've heard there can be traffic even going from west to east, which is the direction I'm traveling. Does anyone know how much time the HOV lane can save going in this direction? I'm considering Bayside and Mineola at this point. Want to be close to LIE and walking distance to LIRR. Thanks for any advice.
Mineola would probably be the first area I'd recommend given your situation. And yes, there's traffic during rush hour in both directions on the LIE so a Prius might make some sense.
While there is traffic going West to East it really isn't a big deal.
While I was still working on my graduate degree I had two jobs where I did a reverse commute and the LIE was no big deal even during peak rush hour.
Very often the regular lanes will pass people in the HOV lane (going east) because they get stuck behind someone on cruise control at 55mph. I used to own a Prius though and I highly recommend the car. At the time I barley had two pennies to my name and I lease one for $0 down and $299/month with a 15k mile lease. It was a great car.

Very often the HOV lane is full of SUVs with families, which is the purpose of the HOV lane, not necessarily a hyper-speed lane.
Plus, Mineola gives your wife the option of using the LIRR should there be a problem with the car. Not the easiest commute, but doable in a pinch.
?
His wife is already planning to walk to the LIRR and commute everyday. It's 35 minutes to Penn or Atlantic Terminal plus 15-20 minutes subway. Door to door for her will be just under an hour. Maybe you meant OP's commute to Stony Brook which would involve a transfer at Hicksville or Huntingtonand door to door close to 90 minutes.

I meant the husband in that case. The person going to Stony Brook has the option of using the LIRR should there be a problem with the car. (Whereas no such backup option exists in Bayside, because that commute would involve a long bus ride to Jamaica)
Thanks so much, everyone! You're all very helpful and I greatly appreciate the thoughts!
