Hello,
My fiance is working in Stony Brook and I will be working in Manhattan. He has a car, I do not. We are looking to live in an area where I can easily take the LIRR/public transportation to work and our commutes would be similar in length. We are looking to spend under $2000/month. All suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Ditto on Mineola great commute but I am thinking that you are going to be hunting for a place to live with that number.

I'd go for Huntington, will be easier for you. No transfers if I'm not mistaken. Not sure about that budget though.

What size apartment are you looking for? Is a 1-bedroom sufficient?

Eagle rock has 1BR in that range in both Carle Place and Mineola: Eagle Rock Apartments at Carle Place in Carle Place, NY | Eagle Rock Apartments

There are plenty of direct trains to Penn Station from Mineola with no transfer necessary. The drive to the train station plus train ride plus subway from Mineola is about an hour. The commute from Huntington will be more like 90 minutes door to door.

It's about 35 miles to Stony Brook from Mineola which will take about 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. There is also train service from Mineola to Stony Brook campus (if that's the location of the job) and the campus has excellent bus service.

She doesn't have a car, and would have to transfer at Huntington - the OP is the one commuting to Stony Brook.

Either of them could commute by train and the OP will be working in NYC.

Syosset Bethpage huntington and Farmingdale come to mind.

Ronkonkoma can also be a strong consideration. In fact Huntington and Ronkonkoma are terminal points to consider
