We are a family of 5 with 3 - 20 something kids living at home (yes, I know, kick them out).

We eat very little meat and do not buy many snacks.

Our monthly grocery bill is roughly $1,000 a month - including the wholesale club visit.

Is this out of line - wife says "no".

Curious what other families are spending.

That's very low for a family feeding five adults. We spend that much feeding two adults and two teenage boys (one living at home full-time, the other a college student who eats less than half his meals at home).

seems high to me. Is everyone home all the time making lunch and eating big breakfasts? I don't think I could drop $250 at the supermarket 4 consecutive weeks...and I buy a lot of fish, meat, beer, etc.

I think its fine, considering that there has been substantial press over the inadequacy of SNAP benefits for feeding a family. SNAP benefit is about $4 per person per day - so that's a baseline of $600 per month for a 5 person family.

I am NOT trying to argue the sufficiency of this amount or get into the politics around it. I know many people can stretch a dollar and say they are doing it on less using their own money. My own mom was truly excellent at home economics and home cooked meals daily to feed a family of 8 on my Dad's middle class salary.

Just providing it as a baseline.

This seems reasonable. We are a family of 5 and spend about this much, however, we do eat a lot of meat, and we buy meat from butcher. We also buy lots of fresh fruit, veggies and berries. We don't buy snacks either, however, we spend money on deli items such as lox, cold cuts, pate, these little niceties do add up. I think we can probably cut it by about 30% if we were just to stick to the basics, but I am a foodie.

Also, is that everything you buy at the wholesale club (laundry detergent, paper towels, razor blades, etc.) or just food?

Good point - this does include all wholesale club items, detergent, cleansers, coffee, paper towels etc.

That sounds very reasonable.

If you're not just spending it all on food it's not bad. Your 20 somethings are contributing to the HH expenses, I hope.
