Great Neck is much more walkable. Especially the Plaza area by the train station.
Roslyn is only walkable in the small downtown area, many streets lack sidewalks as well.
There's much more stuff in Great Neck not to mention much better train service vs Roslyn.
As far as parks go, Great Neck Park District has a pretty large one up by Kings Point.
Great Neck, hands down, but it does depend on neighborhood. Parts of Roslyn Heights are walkable to commerce on Willis Ave. and to the train and are reasonably flat. Parts of Great Neck are not walkable to anything.
As for Great Neck being an "extension of Queens", it is, to the extent one means a bustling town with many different neighborhoods from dense co-op apartments to Gatsby-esque waterfront and everything in between.
I have no dog in this fight, but I've always been amused by "Queens" being used as an insult on these boards. I'd be living in a single family house in Astoria right now if they were not topping $1mm. It can be a great place to live and varies from neighborhood to neighborhood so dramatically that blanket statements do not apply.
Roslyn and Great Neck both have outstanding schools and, I'm sure, the activities you want. They are close to nice parks that have hiking and nature, but Great Neck is generally more urbanized than Roslyn. If you work in the city Great Neck is a better commute. If you don't, then they are both generally convenient locations.
Great Neck is more walkable. Their library has some great programs, and the park system is wonderful. There is a spray park on Great Neck Rd that is great for toddlers in the summers. NYSC has a location walking distance from the train station.
