North shore schools are obviously top of the list for the most part, but you will get much more house for your budget on the south shore, and with your budget, you will most likely be priced out of several of the "top" ones. Not to mention all the south shore districts you mentioned are all considered very good districts.

(South) Merrick and Rockville Centre are the nicest two towns that you listed. Don't do Bellmore if you are considering RVC or Merrick. Your budget might not get you the place you want in Rockville Centre, though.

My niece's husband is trying to unload his mother's house in Merrick south of Merrick Road. Damaged first by Irene and next by Sandy. It's a bargain to be had.

Wantagh school district, hands down. Great train line, fantastic schools, very community oriented, several churches and a synagogue, convenient shopping, good restaurants, access to 3 major parkways, and loaded with cops and FD residents.

South shore I would say Floral park is doable to your work a solid hour easy but it's nice and taxes aren't as bad and the school system is really good. Check NICHE.com. Here's a link as to why you should look more North Shore Where Are Long Island's Best High Schools? 2015 Rankings...

The majority of that list is in your price range and near the water map out proximity to your jobs but schools sell homes more often than not and if the schools great that makes the location great thats my rule of thumb anyway. Long Island school rankings, 2014-15

Also Valley Stream great taxes good schools it's a hidden gem. feels a little vacated to me though
Happy Hunting.
Happy to see my alma mater in the top 10. Surprised to see Jericho has been overtaken, it has always been the most coveted school district in terms of national ranking.
