Florida is full of LI expats, hence all those great stories.
Seems crime is dominating the news headlines these days. Valley Stream is being hit very hard, too bad it seemed to be getting better but being surrounded by high crime areas in SE Queens and to the north is probably not gonna be good in the long term. Crime seems to be rising all over LI, of course its more in areas like Valley Stream, Baldwin but it seems to be going on in other areas too, even Merrick, where there were muggings last month. The problem is as the middle class leave there is a widening gap between poorer communities and the richer communities. Places like Elmont, Hempstead, New Cassel, Roosevelt, Baldwin,etc get more crowded with poorer folks while richer areas like Wantagh, Massapequa, RVC and Merrick get richer, its gonna create more crime. And they are all just a short train ride away from Freeport,etc (is that why they have so many rush hour trains that make Merrick, Bellmore & Wantagh?). This and the drug problems lead to a rise in crime. And that is aided by the sad state of the NCPD, which is down to 1950s manpower levels, grossly inadequate for a much more urbanized place compared to back then.
Of course with Global Warming (warm & humid this Christmas!) sea level rise will make those same richer south shore towns uninhabitable. Bottom line is this, corrupt politicians need to be removed(Mangano & NICE Bus out, MTA Back, NCPD increase force by 25%), laws enforced, and the tax codes changed to restore the middle class (tax luxury items to the hilt, cut taxes for neccesities like homes,etc, affordable homes required in all towns).
Or you can just leave LI which is what so many are doing. Still more will come, lots more yuppies with their Benzes as well as the illegals that will work for them.

I agree with most of what you're saying except a few things; Baldwin is much higher class than those other places that you lumped it with and there's plenty of Benzes to go around (not that it even matters). And the parts of Queens next to Valley Stream are actually not high crime. It's just that the stores, Walmart and easily public transport attract all the trash from all over the city to shop and commit crimes. I notice that most times when they publish a criminal's address in the news there, they are not actually from LI.
You are 100% right about the wealth gap increasing as the middle class refugees escape or become poorer, which will lead to higher inequality and crime.
