Seems most of the big companies moved out of Manhattan into New Jersey - wondering if anyone commutes from LI to NJ on a daily basis & can tell me what to expect? Not sure of the time, cost etc or even whether to drive to take the train to Penn then the train to Jersey.
I had a friend that did it for a year when we were very young, not married and no kids. She was able to carpool a couple days a week and stay with family that lived a couple of miles from her office once a week or so. Even so, she only lasted a year and then moved to NJ. She commuted from Huntington to Hackensack. After she'd been there a year they told her they thought she'd throw in the towel after a couple of months.
I once had a great job offer in New Jersey converting a company's COBOL programs over to C. I did a dry run from Babylon by car and then train, and turned it down. It was just more work just to get there than I wanted.
I think it depends from where to where. I once knew someone who drove from Oceanside to East Brunswick everyday. That was insane. However, I do know people who commute from western Nassau and southwestern Suffolk by train to Hoboken. That's doable.
I know of some people going to Jersey City or Hoboken. I think it's tough (not impossible) even if you're starting in western Nassau. If you can work one day from home it would help.

If you are taking the PATH from near Penn, then it's not really any different than if you had to add on subway time.
Depends where. After 9-11, my company moved office to Hoboken. The commute via the path was technically no different than a subway commute to downtown... albeit logistics are different, it does feel farther away, and you're going under a river. Path access would be key. Taxes were a pain and a consideration.
