We are thinking of putting in a pool. How much do taxes normally go up if you put an in groundpool? What about an above ground pool?

Call your tax assessors office, I am in Smithtown and when I installed my in-ground in 2000, it was .75 per square foot.
Not including paver work...

It may also be more difficult to sell your house in the future because families with very young children or families to be see the pool as a safety hazard until the kids get bigger (late elem school- middle school) and then its a big plus. You also have to factor in maintenance and supplies in addition to extra taxes.

We have two town pools within a 10 min drive where we like to swim laps and admission is $4-$5.

Allstate told me my premium would not change if I added a pool. They suggested a small increase in liability coverage.

You need to put a lot of thought into an inground pool. It's fat money for something you use two months a year. On each side of us are inground pools. The one side it is opened and used maybe 3x a year. The young couple next door put it in a 4-5 years ago and already it's use by kids is lessening because they are 11 and 13. Some people love it. You have to be sure you're going to get use of it for years. We put up an above ground pool when girls were little. Eight yrs later down it came.Some people love it and it's worth the investment.

You will have a more difficult time selling your house. I personally love pools & would have bought one with a pool if i could have - but then again we don't have any lil 'Dawgs'.

A family with children will prob not want it. It decreases the pool of buyers who might be interested. (Hah see what i did there?)

I have children and we specifically looked for homes with pools. You can't avoid putting in a pool just because of resale, that's silly. If they are going to enjoy it for years to come, why think of future buyers who may or may not purchase in 20 years from now? Besides, you only need one buyer...
