Specifically in NY (Long Island, Suffolk), is it true that for a room to technically be considered a "bedroom", does it require at least 1 closet? If so, you can you provide reference to this information. Thanks.
When we were house shopping we liked a house that didn't have built in closets in the rooms. We didn't mind because we were going to rebuild. But our real estate agent advices against it saying we might not be able to get it appraised since it's not considered a bedroom if there's no closet.
I asked a few appraisers about this and all told me that a built-in closet is not required for a room to be counted as a bedroom The answer surprised me, but there it was...
The smallest bedroom in my house does not have a closet but it's certainly made to be a bedroom. No issue with the appraiser considering it a bedroom or anything like that. Common design in my neighborhood of 1920s-1930s houses.
"Technical" by what standards? Certainly there is no law in New York that requires a bedroom to have a closet. Real estate groups may have some definition they use, but why let them dictate what you have in your house? Think of how many older houses were built before closets as we know them even existed; many of them still exist.
In talking with some others, a door is required but a closet may or may not be required. Maybe it depends on the town?
