As a kid growing up in Nassau back n the 60's I would look down on my cousins who lived in Suffolk (Deer Park). I moved away from Long Island 30 years ago and when I get back Nassau looks like Queens to me. Not sure how Suffolk has fared.
Suffolk has far more oddballs per capita than Nassau, so it's Nassau for me. The further from the city you get, the weirder the folk.ive lived ot there and continue to work out there and people are whacked. I worked in Manharran where I would expect some real weirdos and everyone was nice and far more down to earth and normal than anyone on Long Island.
If me and the wife didn't work in Queens and BK. I would move to Northport maybe even Port jeff Village, or way north in Town of Oyster Bay. If you have to commute to NYC Nassau is the way to go, with the exception of the Tuxedo Hills section of Melville and West hills area as you can get to Hicksville or Bethpage station pretty fast. Both those ares are starting at 1mm+ for move in ready homes unless you are willing to backup to the highway.

In all fairness, half the people in Manhattan are conplete nutjobs. Look at one of those bums in the subway the wrong way and they'll have no problem skinning you alive on the spot!
Then you get the psycho hipsters who think they're weirdness is "edgy" when its just...weird.
