I was recently back on LI for three weeks due to a family illness and we were noting the number of squirrels. They were predominantly gray but we did notice a few black ones too. I don't have squirrels in my development as there are few trees that they like, so we really were amazed at how numerous they were.
Not to derail this but we have no planes in my area now either except for the 2 military jets on Tues that come by every week. We were looking forward to seeing the planes and the flight paths have changed and we saw very few.
I've seen blacks in various locations across the island.
Grays definitely the majority. They are everywhere all day long.
Have yet to see a flying squirrel out here, but I know we have them.
Me, "Mr Nature", didn't know we had red squirrels on the island.
I have never seen an American red squirrel on Long Island. They are smaller than the eastern grey or the black squirrel. They often have a ring around their eyes.
