Just thought I would post that after reading all these threads from people dealing with harassment from the housing code Gestapo on Long Island. Its completely unnecessary and is just a revenue scam and a way for control freaks to get off.

No zoning laws = sprawl, floods, building whatever they want where ever they want. Don't want a really tall building built ont he property next to yours? too bad.

The place known for the worst urban sprawl in the USA. Classic. Just because our code dept are gestapo wingnuts doesn't mean code enforcement isn't needed. Your neighbor's illegal fire trap goes up in flames, so might yours if the wind is right, or maybe your kid the volunteer fireman has to go deal with it and gets hurt. You'll be first in line to sue someone. Small price to pay so you can exercise your "freedom" to avoid GFCI's or whatever. Another example of extreme positions that make for nice memes but are actually ridiculous. Our code hassle is part revenue scam and part the result of ambulance chasers. Someone drowns in a backyard pool without permits, they add the municipality to the lawsuit. Taxpayers end up on the hook. That's us.

Yes, Houston did great this summer with all those buildings in the flood zone. More power to them!

Don't blame Houston’s lack of zoning for Harvey flooding

"If science matters, then no, not really. The idea that Houston’s land use decisions were the main cause for flooding is absurd on its face. No amount of regulation will properly absorb or confine a year’s-worth of rainwater falling in five days. New York City, which is basically the anti-Houston — a dense, regulated city — was devastated by Superstorm Sandy, when just a few inches of rain and strong winds caused flooding in all five boroughs.
And the idea that Houston’s land-use decisions were even a minor factor in the flooding looks increasingly baseless. According to a U.S. geological survey, Houston’s clay-based soil is some of the nation’s least penetrable, making flooding there inevitable. The region’s topography is also abnormally flat, slowing the flow of water to the Gulf Coast."
