Hello, we just received our bldg dept approval from Town of Hempstead for lift and elevation, but have not picked up permits yet. We are interested in increasing the height of our crawlspace by 3' so as to make it viable for storage, rather than the 4' height which is not usable at all.

Were wondering if anyone has guidance on submitting an amendment to plans before picking up permits vs. after picking up permits..

Is there any benefit to having the permits first? We understand that if there are fees, will need to be paid, but I believe we are exempt from fees as this is a NY rising project.

I believe many of the fees are waived for legit Sandy victims.

Thank you, yes that is correct. However, I'm not sure whether to submit the amendment now (prior to pulling the permits) vs. pulling permits first then submitting the amendment. Aside from the fee issue, is there any benefit to having the permits in hand first? Do I jeopardize anything by submitting the amendment now before having a permit in hand?

You need to speak with someone who really knows the ins and outs on this.
If you sneeze the wrong way you can totally *********rself.
They’re not happy about giving away all this money so any reason at all that they can find to deny or *********, they most certainly can and will.

Thanks, again, its less about the $ issue, and we arent really making any changes to the plan or what was called for, no upgrades, rather just increasing the degree of mitigation for future flooding issues.

from your first post it appears you want to go 3 feet higher. I think many would consider that an upgrade.

sorry, i meant no upgrades in terms of what NY Rising defines luxury upgrade (sic), i.e. not expanding, adding dormer, upgrading interior finishes, etc.. a 4' crawlspace is, for all intents and purposes, a waste of space. making it a bit higher allows it to be utilized for storage (not living space) and certainly diminishes the possibility of future flooding in the long term. weve experienced 3 floods that produced 4' of water in our home, not looking to do that again, certainly not after elevating..

Not to derail, but, some of these elevated homes just look hideous.
And they totally ruin the rest of the neighborhood because they stick out like a pimple about to burst. Some however have been tastefully done and blend in well.

might not be a "luxury" upgrade, but it's certainly a major scope change. Whether or not that can be handled via a simple "amendment"....that's most likely a question for TOH.
