Back in the day my friend and his sister had all left the nest leaving an entire upstairs empty, which my wife rented. It actually went OK, but these were people that I had known for years.
I have not personally done this, but know 2 people who have rented a room in someone else's house in the past, and it worked well for both of them. Check out roommates.com. There are a couple of other sites like that. Not sure I would trust a Craigslist posting. If you are by a college, they may also have a list of local homeowners willing to rent a room in their house.
If you don't qualify for your own lease, you shouldn't be looking to rent anything. There's your answer. Stay put.
