Not that Long Island is the sunniest place in the US (though it is sunnier than a vast majority of Europe), but the electricity prices sure are up there. Who’s gone solar on their home in this forum?
I didn't install it, on my old house. I looked into it, from an environmental standpoint I am a fan. From an economical standpoint it makes no sense. My bills where lets say $150 avg a month. $1800 a year solar would of brought that down to maybe $300 a year. $1500 a year savings the system would of cost 25k after tax rebates etc. My central AC was on it's death bed a new unit would of cut my bills $200-300 a year. Here is why it is a waste take 25k invest it, at a 7% avg over 25 years the most likely life span of the system. You will have made 83k, yes electric rates go up, my new AC and new appliances would of reduced my rates. Financially it's stupid since long term its a 50k mistake. This is on a small scale most systems cost 40k and up.

We had it installed at my former place of employment.
So yes, I have experience with it.
We needed to replace the roof before the install so add that into the budget if your roof is more than a few years old. Meaning, no more than 2 or 3 years old.
Oh cool. I’m guessing you didn’t actual install solar on your house in the last couple years then. That’s interesting.
For anyone who has actually had solar installed on their own home in the last couple years, can you tell us about your experience?
There's another thread here that goes over it in better detail. A poster named "monstermagnet" is the de-facto spokesman for solar. He is the prototypical advocate from a salesman's perspective. His spin is gold to them. There are several points and counterpoints in that thread. Here's another strong bit of advice -- before you do any research, speak to a real estate attorney. There are some pretty crafty things these solar companies can do to your title/deed, that most wouldn't even think of until it's time to sell. Anyone considering solar would be wise to have an RE attorney involved or at least consult with one beforehand.
