Most special ed programs are based towards children with autism due to the large number of children with autism. What works for autism does not always work for other afflictions. Also remember just because a district offers in house programs, it does not mean that those programs are best for your child.

BOCES has great programs and much bigger budgets to get the equipment and services the children need. Many times districts want to keep the special ed kids in house merely to save money, despite not offering everything that child needs.

I would look for a district that prides itself on offering what the child needs, which means having a fair amount of children moved to BOCES and other programs rather than claiming they can meet the needs for every child.

A district that boasts about how few kids they send out to programs should raise some concerns.
