so now LI lawmakers are demanding an investigation into why this occurs. As if we don't know the answer already. And I'm sure that ten years from now this abuse will still be occurring.

Back in 2015 when LIRR was threatening to strike, MTA had on the table various proposals to cut down on OT. Union wasn't having any of it and ran to Cuomo for protection after even binding arbitration panel said the MTA requests weren't unreasonable and should be good to go.
The Mouth of Albany at first said " I don't run the MTA", then as the strike deadline loomed called a sit down at a hotel with both MTA and union head. Lo and behold a deal was reached that did not include a single OT busting proposal. Cuomo got his victory lap as the man who saved Long Islanders from a strike, and LIRR got screwed. That is pretty much state of things today....
Again unions in this state run Albany. Cuomo is busy raising money for *something* (I'll give you three guesses....), which means the MTA won't likely get much cover if they try again to go toe to toe with LIRR unions, who IIRC are due for a new contract.
NYT ran a huge piece on vast amounts of waste, fraud and abuse (including likely no show jobs) on that giant very expensive rat hole known as East Side Access project. You heard crickets from MTA, LIRR, Cuomo and Albany in general. That should tell you something...
"But Caputo logged a staggering 3,864 overtime hours in 2018 — clocking in almost every weekend while averaging 15 hours a day, *according to the MTA."
"
But the agency admitted he didn’t even log in most of his overtime hours doing his regular job — he mostly used his seniority to get first dibs on “opportunities” in other areas."
"Thanks to the terms of his union contract, Caputo was able to pull rank to grab extra hours in roles including driver, track welder, track patroller and mechanic, the MTA said."
In other words when OT wasn't available for his regular job, Caputo pulled rank and took what he could find elsewhere.
What an idiot, hope that extra 200k or whatever is worth having literally no life.
Not sure if I should envy the guy or praise him for his work ethic. How anyone could work that many hours in a year is beyond me!
I wonder if he really “worked”?
I'm sure tons of these people work hard on normal duty and on OT, but I have personally seen 2 close friends of mine on LIRR "overtime" kicking back in a trailer watching football or napping in a work truck. I don't agree with it, but sometimes the terms of the gig dictate that someone simply has to be there, and sometimes it's on OT. Not every gig in the MTA involves swinging a pickaxe and digging trenches.

I’ve heard second hand from reputable sources about MTA mechanics on the clock sleeping under their trains. The lack of work ethic apparently is systemic.

Guy earned nearly a million in OT in past three years, plus now is getting a fat pension of about $170k per year. All this piled on his retiring at 62 (assuming) and thus statistically has twenty or so years left to enjoy all that loot. Oh and all that extra money likely goosed his Social Security so he (and the missus) will be getting max contribution benefits.
Mr. Caputo, his missus, their children and likely grandchildren will all be fine. For about three or four years of "ahem" *hard work* the guy is on easy street. Probably will join the huge numbers of NYS/NYC area union/civil servants with fat pensions that move to Florida, North Carolina or some other low to nil income tax state to "protect" their pensions from taxes.
This mr Caputo might not get to enjoy his retirement for long.
For one, if he really worked all these hours, his health might be shot sooner than later and secondly because of the exposure, he might get investigated for fraud.
I still recall the many “sick” people who were on disability.
We shall see.

If he’s even married just wait until the missus divorces him for never being around taking half of his pension and OT checks. No amount of blood money is worth sacrificing years of your life not seeing your family to rot away at some crappy MTA facility.
