In response to the COVID-19 health crisis, Nassau County announced that they are further extending the filing deadline to April 30th, 2020 for property tax grievances.
Denied here. So yes. It was pretty slim pickings as far as finding comparable sales cheaper than my assessed value.
Maybe if I paid the grievance companies who are in cahoots then I could've gotten something back. Or maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt after the reassessment. Time will tell what the grievance success rates will be.
Is it worth paying those grievance companies to lower the property taxes or is this something I can do myself?
Do not pay them! You can do it on your own, your not getting a reduction unless you find compatible homes in your town and SD that sold for less than your assessed value.

From what I understand, in Nassau County you can grieve online. I'm in Suffolk, where each Town (not Hamlet) has their own assessment process, unlike Nassau, where the County assesses all properties.
I'm all for saving money, but sometimes professionals are more effective and/or successful.
The first time I grieved myself (successfully), but subsequently became aware that most grievances were denied, in which case the SCAR process was the next step. To me, it was worth a one-time payment to have someone else go to Small Claims Court and fight it out (payment only due if successful). The company I finally ended up with (after a big bust with another) has since successfully grieved my taxes additional times over the years. I now pay less than I did in 2002! They were also successful for a daughter's tax assessment. In addition, some of my real estate clients also reported success with this particular company.
Again, to me it was worth it. You need to decide for yourself.
I still get letters from the grievance companies in the mail. They've tracked me 2K miles to the other side of the country. It's annoying, but props must be given for tenacity.
I brought my NY ways with me and grieved once out here; got a modest reduction. Property tax rage is not a thing out here, as we're all paying about 75% less.
