Hi
I am a first time homeowner. We purchased our house this year and the purchasing price is a way lower that its current assessed value. Is it easy to win if you file grievance by yourself or do you recommend that I hire a grievance attorney in general?
Any sharing of your experiences will be greatly appreciated.

I closed on my house around this time a year ago. My 20-21 reassessed "fair" market value was almost 10% higher than the purchase price.

I filed the grievance by myself. I listed 4 comps, all from the same school district with a similar number of beds and baths, all around my purchase price.

The commission picked the highest of the 4 comp selling prices, and I accepted.

Are you in Nassau or Suffolk County?

Nassau is very easy. They have a surprisingly good website set up and it takes like 15 minutes.

Suffolk is a huge pain and you pretty much need to use a firm.

Suffolk can depend on the town. I grieved on my own in Southold town, it was simple, painless, and friendly. Took about 2 weeks and dropped my taxes 10%.
