Our district is on top of this. I'm personally working 5:00 AM until 10:00 PM. The kids are learning. We are putting in the work. Other districts are unfortunately doing nothing.
Roslyn sd at the elementary school level is doing a terrible job. Teacher emails lessons, no online, remote or interactive teaching. My wife is furious because her friends in Queens have remote teaching and they are not paying the insane school taxes we do.
Wow, I did not expect this, I think this will need to be fixed as distance learning is a big part of today's change to embrace technology. The teachers and administrators will have to introspect and adapt to this new reality.
Simply put - I feel like school is still in session (the amazing teachers are doing a wonderful job with the daily structured materials/assignments - online adhoc zoom and hangout conferences and pre-recorded guides to help the students navigate through the day ). They also have make up days for students who are having issues coping up with this and bringing them upto speed for next monday.
So after more research into why the lack of video learning... 2 issues:
1) Apparently there have been cases where zoom sessions have been hacked and pornography inserted. Either that or students misuse an image of their teacher similarly.
2) There are many teachers who are technically challenged.
Neither of these were openly divulged, but came to light after much discussion and teeth-pulling.
There are still workarounds to getting through to kids but I'm not seeing the effort other than sitting in front of their email and being available. Bottom line as a parent paying a ridiculous amount specifically for education - the busy-work with little intellectual engagement that has my kids on their video games or whatever else by 11am every school day is not going to cut it. The onus is on them to get it right.
Tenured gym and music teachers have it made now. They are getting paid to do nothing.
Our district gym teachers actually collaborated on a video for a daily workout and put it on YouTube. More than I can say for the core teachers' effort so far for sure.
My daughter who is a senior in highschool was having a lot of trouble submitting her schoolwork today. I guess since everyone is home and on the internet it is slowing down the wifi and the website is being overwhelmed. She was trying to submit her homework and the internet stopped to a crawl and the website crashed. She had to keep trying to resubmit her schoolwork on numerous occasions with no luck.
Then she had to take an online test and in the middle of it the site crashed again. She kept trying to resubmit her work all day long and the same thing kept happening. She could not get her homework assignments to go through and she is afraid she will get penalized for it. She was worried that her teachers will think that she was lying.

Wow that's impressive. Our district gym teacher put together a simple spreadsheet a few weeks ago with a daily activity routine. That's about it.
