Not sure about other areas, but the bulk of long Island property taxes go to the local school district. The teacher's union in NY and North east part of the country seems to be very powerful and influential, where teachers and school admin not only are well paid, but also have great health and retirement benefits. At one meeting I attended, the school principal claimed LI only gets back about 75 cents for every educational dollar it collects in taxes, with the balance spread amongst NYC and upstate school districts. Nassau and Suffolk police officers collect some of the highest salaries for police work in the nation, even more than NYCPD.
I've heard that other areas outside of the Northeast have a more equitable way of spreading around the cost of public schooling so that homeowners don't have such a heavy burden of paying such high taxes. It's worth taking a look at other areas. I've also heard of many parents of graduating high school seniors, strongly encouraging their kids to go to university off LI and to not return to LI after they graduate, ending the cycle of having to make a high salary only to pay it out to pay high taxes to be near family, with the parents eventually moving in retirement to be near their resettled kids, off the Island.
