I would shop around. My home is 30 years old, and the "builder grade" a/c unit died after about 12 years. We replaced it with a better unit, but the important factor was that the manufacturer, Rheem, had a promotion going at the time. If your furnace had died, and you were replacing it, they'd provide a new a/c unit, free. (this didn't include the installation, however). If your a/c unit had died, as was the case with me, they were throwing in a new furnace for free, again, the installation charges were extra.
I replaced my whole central AC last year. The air handler in the attic, the ductwork, and the condenser unit outside (5 ton) for I think $9k or right around there. I got three quotes and IIRC they were $9k, $11k, and $14k.
I kinda wish I had spent a little more and done two zones, but oh well. We have solar now so I don't really care about the electricity costs.
