How much should a deck cost? lets say 500sqft composite trex, simple design, elevated 4 feet, one staircase.
or how about a per square foot price? Some quotes i'm getting are wild, approaching $90 a sqft...
I’d say $30K. I rebuilt a similar sized deck a number of years ago but in cedar for around $10K which included tools I needed to buy. I was quoted around $20K for someone to do it for me.
That included deck boards, rebuilding the railing, steps with new stringers and skirting around the whole deck.
My number might be low at the moment though given the price increase in materials.
Design it in 2d, then switch to 3d and change the materials to what you'd like, finally at the lower left corner hit the product list button. That will give you a run down of the items AND their costs at lowes.
I just ran a 20x25 deck with trex decking and trex rails through the designer and came up with a little under 15k.
Same design with cedar decking and pressure treated rails a little under 8k, with pressure treated decking/rails a little under 6k.
This doesn't include any labor or delivery charges.
4 years ago I rebuilt a 415 sq ft deck. I just replaced the surface boards Astro’s and railing. Structure was fine. Got quotes 5-6k for PT lumber. Did it myself for $1700 took me a weekend by myself and maybe 2 hours of assistance to our the 4x4 in for railings.
Bethpage lumber has really good prices and the boards are straight unlike the crap the bib fix sells.

I can’t remember which lumber yard I used but most of the boards were straight (I hand selected them), but 12’ cedar is rarely 100% perfectly straight. The BoWrench was a godsend.
In my case the original railings were horrible (2x4s butted on top of the balusters) and there weren’t enough stringers on the stairs either. So I fixed all of these when I rebuilt them.
Read the OP carefully and then read your reply. Comedy gold!
